Surprised Again

Surprised again by my dear book club. A book about WORLD WAR II for goodness sake, AND we go into it KNOWING that it remained unfinished because the author herself was exterminated at Auschwitz. I swear, the things these people push me to.

I love it.

A marvel of perfectly balanced contrast, characters who are at once compelling, odious, pitiable and elevating- and (here, you really have to give the translator credit) voice and word choice that simply make you stop and reread . There's nothing that I can say that will add to any of the reviews, but let me just say I've been surprised again.

I have been pushed time and time again to pick up titles- genres, even,- that I would NEVER. HAVE. CONSIDERED. and they are transforming.
