String ties and wranglers

In our town, there are deeply entrenched Westerners. You may think that's obvious, but Den is a big city, with sky semiscrapers, rush hour traffic, several federal sites that put us on lists at Homeland Secur, mass transit rail, and, well, malls with valet parking. It has the usual list of national chain suspects. It has a smog problem.

Anyway, every January, we are the hosts of a big stock show. From my allergic point of view, and my son's asthmatic point of view, and my daughter's easily overstimulated point of view, it's a one-time thing. If that. BUT...

Every year, a local arts center (where Madame Librarian volunteers!) hosts the Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering to coincide with the influx of wranglers (and Wranglers). I first went to this 6 years ago, and I promised myself I would NEVER miss it again. Just went yesterday. My cool brother-in-law and his compadre played several sessions. He is a pretty prolific author of Western expansion, and a skilled musician. The poetry gathering is at least half music, and it's not to be confused with COUNTRY music. It is cowboy music, swing music, western music, some of it deeply philosophical, and some of it Chester-ishly comic. Check it out here.

In other news, I have evidently moved to Minnesota, or, like, Canada or something. A deep freeze has followed our string of blizzards, and you know, I'm not complaining. Because it has gotten the attention of the preteen, who has taken up WEARING SOCKS. So, hey, evidence that there is still some functioning in his wildly developing gray matter.

(OK, clap for the links.)
