Northwest Denver and the Ruts of Doom

Let's see. The storm that swallowed the Front Range started on December 20. That storm was followed closely by ANOTHER significant storm, which was followed by ANOTHER. Today is January 11. Freezing rain is forecast for tonight into tomorrow.

Have you ever been to an amusement park that has those little cars that children THINK they are steering? And the car pretty much just goes forward until a curve in the central track yanks it abruptly to the side? That is EXACTLY what it feels like to drive in my neighborhood. And two-way traffic? No. There is only one set of ice ruts, you see. And if someone else is approaching, you just better hope that one or the other of you can somehow crank yourself out of the trench- maybe at some low point where an industrious homeowner actually shoveled out a parking place for themselves.

We happen to live on a corner, and in front of our house runs the gutter that leads to the storm drain. What this means is that OUR gutter is deeper, and the dip in the intersection more pronounced than at the other sides of the street. Well, the storm drain is completely blocked, of course. Which means that what melting has occurred runs down the lowest gutter, and then pools and freezes in the lowest dip. In front of our house. Are you getting this?

Oh, and for two weeks now, there has been an orphaned bumper plunged upright into the snowbank across the street, in case its bumperless owner happens by and recognizes it. I saw a bumper in the TRASHCAN of the Walgreens the other day.

It's just nutty.
