4:30 Christmas night

Well the gaiety started at 5:30 A.M. and was pretty much quelled by 8:00. Rose is still in her nightgown, although her Barbies, Pollies and Calico Critters have all gone through several outfits by now. I have started roasting a pork tenderloin for dinner, and heating up some corn spoonbread and sweet potatoes. Andy has settled in to his computer game, which apparently involved bayonets. I try not to listen too closely.

It is very gray here- not like yesterday, which was positively sparkling. It's pretty cold, although I confess I haven't ventured out. I'm suffering from a post-presents hangover. I'm sure I would feel better if I went and folded laundry or something.

Not reading anything blogworthy. The book club is reading the Dylan Thomas book about a child's Christmas in Wales, which I bought for Peter last year. I haven't started it yet.

I did go see "The Princess and the Frog," which I thought was enchanting, and about which I am NOT prepared to wax political. I would like very much to go see the Sherlock Holmes movie, and as I am not a purist, I am perfectly fine with Robert Downey Jr. NOT wearing a deerstalker hat, smoking a pipe, or acting sober. I just think it looks good. (update: Wikipedia informs me that in the novels, Holmes is never described as wearing a deerstalker hat, and, in fact,

uninformed depictions of Holmes that describe him wearing this hat in the city fail to take into account that the fashion-conscious Holmes would never commit such a sartorial faux pas; the deerstalker is traditionally a rural outdoors-man's cap, not the appropriate headgear for the properly-dressed urban gentleman

In other possibly Holmesian related news, I bought some port yesterday. I went in for sherry and came out with port, and I can't see ever going back to sherry. I don't drink much of anything at all, ever, but I have liked sherry around the holidays. I just didn't want to get anything too sticky. I turned to a fellow shopper, with only the bleakest of expectations that she- or anybody in there- would have any knowledge about port, except maybe that it was shared by menfolk in Jane Austen novels. Well, this woman responded, "Yes, I know a LOT about port," and proceeded to caution me to SIP it, encouraged me to enjoy it with a cigar (?), approved of the little bottle that I chose ("That brand is particularly smooth,") and told me she had once owned a small wine store in Chicago. Call it an early Christmas present, I guess.

I am missing old friends tonight, and hoping that all are happy and well.

Hello old friend. You are an old friend I am missing. I've read through blog posts and am sending an e-mail instead of commenting hinkle pinkle everywhere.

Merry Christmas!

Love your posts--need more of them! (although I am sorely lacking that department myself these days).

If you ever want to know anything about wine, Danelle's husband is a good resource.

Happy Week After Christmas!

That was me up there as "anonymous".

Damn buttons to click-- never can pick the right one.

Caveman is a BIG fan of port and would probably tell you to take a sip followed by a bite of chocolate. Dark I think.
